Although they document some accounts they don't know what causes them. This blog has previously provided an answer. see: here, and here
Essentially what we are saying is that of the three dimensions of time that define consciousness, one only survives clinical death, namely 'imaginary' time, that responsible for dreaming, the ineffable traits, appreciation of the arts and discernment of the abstract. The survival of this part of consciousness allows the brain to continue to prepare the person for what comes next, final death. It is no more than what the brain does throughout life by means of dreams; prepare the person for what comes next on the journey of life.
